They allow you to quickly perform a search on several websites. For example, from DuckDuckGo, I can enter
!archwiki makepkg…so I’ll quickly go to the makepkg Arch Wiki page. Today I changed my default search engine from Google to DuckDuckGo. I’ll give it a try.
